Scenario: A two-socket-capable server currently has one processor and needs more RAM.

Before ordering DIMMs, the administrator checks which memory slots belong to the installed processor, the supported DIMM type, the required population order and whether existing modules can be combined with the proposed upgrade. Simply buying enough DIMMs to reach the desired total capacity is not sufficient.

Decision: Populate memory according to the exact server manual and preserve a sensible future upgrade path instead of filling every slot with small modules.

Memory channels

Modern server processors contain multiple memory channels. Population rules are designed to balance DIMMs across channels and processors.

Processor count matters

On many two-socket servers, memory slots are electrically associated with a particular processor. Slots attached to an uninstalled second processor may not be usable.

Do not mix memory types casually

RDIMM and LRDIMM are different memory architectures and generally cannot be mixed in one server. Module speed, rank, capacity and generation must also comply with the server manual.

Upgrade planning

Filling every slot with small DIMMs can make future expansion expensive. A sensible configuration balances present capacity, channel utilisation and future upgrade options.
