Faster Ethernet is not automatically better. The useful speed is the one that matches the connected devices, workload and network design.
1GbE
Gigabit Ethernet remains common for general business network connectivity. It can be appropriate for ordinary workstation, printer and other network connections where higher throughput is not required.
2.5GbE
2.5GbE provides more bandwidth than 1GbE while using the same general Ethernet cabling approach where the cabling and equipment support it. It can be useful for devices that need more than gigabit connectivity without moving every connection to 10GbE.
10GbE
10GbE can provide substantially more bandwidth and is commonly considered for servers, storage, uplinks and other higher-throughput applications.
The complete path matters
A fast network card does not create a fast end-to-end connection by itself. The device, cable, transceiver where applicable, switch port and destination all need to support the intended connection.
Do not create a bottleneck elsewhere
If a server has 10GbE connectivity but the storage, uplink or application cannot provide or consume the additional throughput, the higher network speed may not provide the expected benefit.
