What Do VA and Watts Mean on a UPS?

UPS capacity is commonly expressed using both VA and watts. Understanding both helps prevent choosing a UPS that is too small for the actual load.

VA and watts describe different aspects of electrical load. A UPS specification can include both, and the connected equipment needs to fit within the manufacturer's limits.

Scenario: A rack contains a server, NAS, managed switch and router. Their illustrative planning load totals 860 W.

Adding 25 percent design headroom gives approximately 1,075 W. The UPS must support both the required watt load and VA load. Runtime is then checked separately against the manufacturer's runtime data for the exact UPS and battery configuration.

Decision: First confirm capacity, then decide whether the objective is only to bridge short interruptions, allow an orderly shutdown or maintain operation for a longer period. Each objective produces a different battery requirement.

What are volt-amperes?

VA represents apparent power. In an AC system, apparent power and real power are related through the power factor of the load.

A UPS can have a VA rating and a lower watt rating. The connected load needs to remain within both relevant limits.
