A server cabinet is not simply a metal enclosure. It provides the physical environment in which servers, switches, storage, power distribution and accessories are installed and managed.
Standing cabinets
Standing cabinets are used where equipment needs to be installed in a floor-standing rack environment. The required rack height and usable depth depend on the equipment being installed.
Wall mount cabinets
Wall mount cabinets can be appropriate for smaller networking and communications installations where a floor-standing cabinet is not required. The equipment depth and wall structure need to be considered.
Open racks
Open racks provide a rack mounting structure without the enclosed cabinet format. They can be useful in installations where physical enclosure is not required.
Rack units and equipment depth
Rack equipment is commonly specified by rack height. Before buying a cabinet, check the height and depth requirements of every item that will be installed, including rails and cable connections.
Rails, shelves and cabinet hardware
Server equipment may require compatible rail kits. Shelves can be used for equipment that is not designed for direct rack mounting. Cage nuts, screws and other hardware are small components but are essential to a practical installation.
Power distribution and cable management
PDUs distribute power within the rack. Cable managers and other accessories help keep connections organised and accessible.
Airflow and access
Cabinet planning should allow equipment to be installed, serviced and connected without creating unnecessary cable obstruction or restricting the intended airflow path.
Questions to answer before buying
- How many rack units are required?
- How deep is the equipment?
- Will rail kits be installed?
- How much space should be left for future equipment?
- Where will power distribution be mounted?
- How will cables enter and leave the cabinet?
- Does the installation require a lockable enclosure?
- Is a standing or wall-mounted cabinet more appropriate?
