A server chassis is the physical foundation of a rack server build. Choosing one requires more than selecting a rack height.
Rack height
Server chassis are commonly described by rack units such as 1U, 2U, 3U and 4U. The required height depends on the components, expansion requirements and physical design of the system.
What else needs to fit?
Consider the motherboard or server platform, processor cooling, memory, drive bays, expansion cards, power supplies and cabling. A chassis needs to accommodate the complete configuration.
Drive bays and storage
The number and type of available drive bays affect the storage configuration. Drive compatibility and the required storage controller should be considered together.
Cooling and airflow
Server components generate heat. Chassis fans and the overall airflow design need to suit the components installed in the system.
Rack installation
Rack rails and cabinet depth are part of the physical installation. Check the chassis dimensions and compatible rail hardware before installation.
