CAT6 vs CAT6A

CAT6 and CAT6A are both widely used Ethernet cable categories. The right choice depends on speed, distance, installation and future requirements.

Choosing Ethernet cable is not simply a matter of choosing the highest category available. The cable should suit the network speed, installation and expected service life.

Scenario: A new office requires 48 desk outlets, wireless access points, VoIP phones and IP cameras.

The design works backwards from outlet locations to patch panels and switches. Permanent horizontal cabling is kept separate from replaceable patch leads. Cable category, shielding requirements, PoE use, pathways, labelling and rack termination are decided before installation.

Verification: Completed links are tested and documented. A simple continuity result should not be confused with certification against a cabling performance standard.

CAT6

CAT6 is widely used for business Ethernet installations and can support high-speed network connections over appropriate distances when the complete installation meets the required specifications.

CAT6A

CAT6A is designed for higher-performance Ethernet applications and provides additional capability compared with CAT6. It is often considered where 10GbE and future network requirements are part of the design.

The installation matters

Cable category is only one part of the link. Patch panels, keystone jacks, patch leads, connectors and installation practices should be appropriate for the intended cabling category.

Think about the future

Structured cabling can remain in place for many years. If higher network speeds are likely to be introduced during the useful life of the installation, choosing suitable cabling at the beginning can avoid unnecessary replacement later.
