1. Define the application
Record the active equipment, optical module type, wavelength, fibre type and required reach. Do not declare compatibility until both ends and the path are known.

Build the optical path first, then calculate what the entered passive components contribute.
2. Record passive path
Length, mated connections, splices and any other passive components contribute to the planned link loss.
3. Use verified component values
Use cable attenuation and connector/splice values from the applicable project specification or manufacturer information rather than hidden defaults.
4. Compare with the application
The calculated passive loss must be compared with the applicable optical budget or maximum channel loss for the actual application.
