Scenario: A warehouse needs reliable WiFi for handheld scanners, staff devices and fixed equipment.

Access points are not selected by advertised range alone. The design considers building dimensions, shelving and stock, client density, interference, roaming, wired uplinks and PoE. High-mounted metal racking can materially affect radio propagation.

Decision: Coverage and capacity should be planned together. Adding one extremely powerful access point is not a substitute for sensible placement and channel planning.

WiFi 6 remains useful

WiFi 6 is still a practical choice for many offices, warehouses and general business deployments. A network should be upgraded because there is a real capacity, coverage or client requirement, not simply because a newer standard exists.

What WiFi 7 adds

One important feature is Multi-Link Operation, or MLO. Ubiquiti describes MLO as allowing compatible client devices to maintain simultaneous connections across multiple bands on a UniFi access point. This can improve latency, stability and, in some situations, throughput.

WiFi 7 also supports wider channels and higher modulation capabilities. The practical benefit depends on the client devices, RF environment, access point model and wired uplink.

The wired network can become the bottleneck

Your product range illustrates this clearly. The U7-Lite has a 2.5 GbE Ethernet port, while the U7-Pro-XG and U7-Pro-XGS use 10 GbE Ethernet. A 10 GbE access point connected through a 1 GbE switch port cannot deliver more than a 1 GbE wired uplink to the rest of the network.

When WiFi 7 makes sense

  • New deployments where you want a longer useful life from the wireless infrastructure.
  • High-density environments with compatible modern clients.
  • Sites where multi-gigabit wireless traffic is expected.
  • Deployments where 2.5 GbE or 10 GbE switching is already planned.

When WiFi 6 may be the sensible choice

  • The majority of clients are WiFi 5 or WiFi 6.
  • Internet bandwidth and application traffic do not justify multi-gigabit wireless.
  • The existing switching infrastructure is only 1 GbE.
  • The main requirement is reliable coverage rather than maximum throughput.
