Scenario: A business needs managed office WiFi and switching, while a separate requirement connects remote buildings using outdoor wireless links.

UniFi is evaluated for the managed LAN, gateways, switching and access points. UISP products are evaluated for service-provider-style or outdoor point-to-point and point-to-multipoint infrastructure where appropriate.

Decision: Select the product family from the network role rather than assuming all Ubiquiti products are part of one interchangeable management architecture.

Where UISP fits

A typical UISP deployment can contain outdoor radios, customer premises equipment, routers, switches, antennas and fibre equipment. The platform is particularly relevant to wireless internet providers, rural connectivity projects, campus links and distributed sites.

airMAX, LTU and Wave are not interchangeable

Ubiquiti's documentation distinguishes these technologies. airMAX is an established outdoor wireless platform with point-to-point and point-to-multipoint deployments. LTU is a proprietary Ubiquiti protocol and is not compatible with ordinary 802.11n/ac or airMAX devices. Wave uses a different radio platform aimed at high-capacity wireless transport.

Why product selection needs planning

The radio is only one part of the link. Antenna type, frequency, channel width, distance, interference, line of sight, mounting, PoE and the Ethernet interface all affect the final deployment.

Remote sites need power planning too

Outdoor wireless sites often use PoE, and some deployments may need solar or battery-backed power. Ubiquiti provides specific PoE compatibility information for its ISP wireless equipment. The correct power source should therefore be selected from the exact device requirements rather than from a generic PoE label.
