INSTALLER HANDBOOK

Fibre Installer Handbook

A practical fibre guide built around inspection, cleanliness, loss budgets, test methods, documentation and fault isolation.

Before installation

  • Identify fibre type, connector type, polarity method and application requirements.
  • Verify the cable construction is suitable for the route and environment.
  • Check manufacturer pulling tension and bend-radius limits before pulling.
  • Plan splice, patch and slack-management locations.

Connector hygiene

  • Inspect end faces before mating.
  • If cleaning is required, clean with a method intended for fibre connectors and inspect again.
  • Do not assume a factory-new connector is clean.
  • Keep test reference cords and tester adapters clean too.

Loss testing

  • Establish the applicable pass/fail limit before testing.
  • Use the test method required by the project specification.
  • Set the reference correctly for the chosen method.
  • Record wavelength, direction where required, length and measured loss.

OLTS and OTDR

  • An OLTS measures end-to-end optical loss.
  • An OTDR characterises events along the link and can locate connectors, splices and faults.
  • They answer different questions and are complementary.
  • If a project specification requires OTDR testing, an OLTS pass does not remove that requirement.

Polarity and patching

  • Document fibre IDs and end-to-end polarity.
  • Do not fix a polarity problem by randomly swapping patch leads without updating documentation.
  • Protect unused adapters and connectors from contamination.
  • Record patch-panel positions and destination ports.

Handover

  • Deliver loss-test records and OTDR traces where required.
  • Document fibre type, connector type, route and termination positions.
  • Record repairs, splices and exceptions.
  • Keep a clean baseline for future troubleshooting.
Field rule: inspect before you connect. Contamination can introduce loss and reflections and can compromise test results.

How to use this handbook

Values that depend on a product, project specification, test limit, local requirement or manufacturer warranty must be verified from that source. Netcomtech does not turn an example product specification into a universal installation rule.
